“Besides the many talents Ann [Philbin] and her accomplished staff have, they really know how to throw a great party,” proclaimed Marcy Carsey, the chair of the Hammer Museum’s board, on Saturday evening in Los Angeles at the Hammer Museum’s annual Gala in the Garden, with generous support from Bottega Veneta. Guests mingled on the museum’s second-level outdoor balcony overlooking a courtyard sheathed in twinkling lights, where they would soon dine. January Jones, wearing a bright pink silk jacquard laminated Bottega Veneta frock, made her way to the bar past the ever-dashing Orlando Bloom, while Elizabeth Banks and Rita Wilson posed for a picture.

After cocktails, Zoë Saldana staked an early claim at her table, and Dianna Agron and Jane Lynch descended the staircase together arm in arm. Rashida Jones was one of the last to take a seat at her table, just in time for the welcome remarks to begin. Artists Joni Mitchell and Mark Bradford were the guests of honor at this year’s gala, and Cameron Crowe and Sarah Lewis introduced them, respectively, while Ashley Olsen, Kate Bosworth, and Julia Roberts listened on. Mitchell, in Issey Miyake, shared some of her performance fashion inspiration and revealed that her mother was not a fan of her hippie style so she bought Joni sequined gowns to wear onstage because she thought “I needed to be more elegant if I’m going to be famous.” But a damp blue jacket bled on to and ruined the dresses just before a show in Memphis, so she wore the only thing she could find that she liked at the last minute: a men’s Yves Saint Laurent suit, a grey velour hat, and a feather boa. As the night drew to a close, Sia took the stage to perform the songs “Chandelier” and “Breathe Me,” and Piper Perabo and Emmy Rossum swayed to the music.
